Ladies' Lunch

Ladies' lunch takes place at Zoom every Thursday from 12:00 to 13:30. It is the ideal place to meet other expats.

 

If it is your lunch break, bring your lunch along. Your lunch may already be the first topic to talk about: what are you eating? Did you cook it and then brought it along to work? Is it traditional for your country? Do you also cook German dishes? 

After some small talk we will speak about what happened since our last meeting. What did you enjoy? What puzzled you? Did you encounter any challenges?

 

SHARING CHALLENGES

When you talk with others who are having similar challenges it can have many effects of you:  you will experience a sense of empathy and mutual understanding. The other expat ladies can relate to your situation as they are/were in the same situation.

Your expat challenges are different than the ones Germans encounter. After the expat-honeymoon phase you may feel homesick and lonely - as most expats do. 

You may question if this was the right step - again you are not the only expat who is confronted with that question. However, very often this is not openly discussed, even if you meet for example in an English-speaking book club or similar. Usually, hardly anybody admits that they face challenges. 

The community of other expats at the Ladies' Lunch can offer emotional support and encouragement. It can also be inspiring to hear about the others' journeys and how the coped with or overcame similar obstacles. 

 

SHARING POSITIVE EMOTIONS

And of course, we want to share also funny anecdotes of living in Germany. Or some funny words you came across or which you "created in your language class.  Laughter is so important, especially laughing about one's own mistakes. And as a side note, the best way do deal with making language mistakes is to laugh about them yourself. You brain will remember this mistake much easier as it connects the corrected answer with a special situation.

 

Laughing in a group means sharing positive emotions and bringing lightness to your soul. It helps to reduce anxiety, negative thoughts and tension and stress.

You feel connected when you share laughter with others.

SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT

 

In times of challenges a network of like-minded ladies can be extremely comforting. It feels like being in a good team where you can rely on the other team members. It creates a feeling of being part of like-minded people and this gives you a sense of belonging which can be very supportive in your new expat journey.

You may find new friends here who you can also meet outside the Ladies lunch, maybe you also meet offline. And enjoy a glass of wine or some coffee together.
